Around where I live, Denny’s has a subpar reputation. A classic American restaurant, it serves meals at any time of the day, but is more well known for its brunch and its availability at 2 am. “Why are you going to Denny’s,” my sister asked me, “their food tastes like plastic!” I scoffed and told her she was being ridiculous. It’s still here, no one’s bought it out, it hasn’t run out of business, so the food couldn’t be that bad.
I met a friend for brunch last week to catch up on our summers. We had quite a few options actually, all of them ones that we’ve eaten at before. I had never been to Denny’s, and I wanted to see for myself whether the food was as bad as people were making it out to be. It was pretty empty when I arrived, which didn’t seem out of the ordinary since it was a Monday around one o’clock pm. They got us a table pretty quickly and we got right to looking through the menu. Even though it was past lunch time, I still felt the urge to eat breakfast so I ended up choosing the new Loaded Veggie Omelette (look at picture below!).
The service was a bit slow considering the lack of other customers, but I didn’t mind because it gave my friend and I more time to talk. Having low expectations for the food helped, I think, because the food didn’t taste nearly as “plastic” as my sister claimed it to be. Of course, this was no high class restaurant, far from it, but I found myself enjoying the meal nonetheless as I crunched my way through the toasted english muffin (not pictured). The fruit was definitely fresh, I could tell, but the vegetables in the omelette… not so much. The zucchini, to me, tasted like it could’ve even been frozen, thawed, sauteed and then served but I would give the whole meal a passing score.
Denny’s is definitely not my top choice of a restaurant for any occasion, but it was not necessarily a bad meal experience in my opinion. On the plus side… it’s open 24/7 so if you happen to be wandering about town at two in the morning and your stomach is screaming at you to be fed, you have this as an option.
